180 Sports Mens Midweek

Focus, fundamentals and follow-through! These are three vital characteristics to excel in sports, business and most importantly, the spiritual race marked out for us! What a great night as almost 150 men gathered at Fullers Rec Center last Wednesday to be reminded of the many benefits of focusing on our King, Jesus, living out the “big fundamental” in the greatest commandment, and the power of following through as men of integrity and conviction. After Jeff Hickman encouraged, inspired and challenged everyone, we began the “no-impact accuracy skills challenge” to put these qualities into practice. We competed in many challenges such as: quarterback throws, free throws, putting, soccer kicks, Frisbee toss, corn hole and baseball. At the conclusion of the night, 7 men received the victors crown but not without being reminded of what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 9: 24-27

“In a race all the runners run. But only one gets the prize. You know that, don’t you? So run in a way that will get you the prize. All who take part in the games train hard. They do it to get a crown that will not last. But we do it to get a crown that will last forever. So I do not run like someone who doesn’t run toward the finish line. I do not fight like a boxer who hits nothing but air. No, I train my body and bring it under control. Then after I have preached to others, I myself will not break the rules and fail to win the prize.”

Sports is a metaphor for life. The writer in Hebrews also refers to this in chapter 12 when the Scriptures challenge us to throw off all that hinders and entangles and to run with perseverance the race marked out for us. The Word also commands us to FOCUS our eyes on Jesus and to consider Him so we do not grow weary and lose heart when the distractions and discouragement comes. In other words, to follow through with our honored commitment and promise to make Jesus Lord no matter what challenges life throws at us!

We want to extend a special thank you to the following men and teenagers who helped make this a memorable night together: Luciano Della Venezia, Adeoye Famodun, Tony Karamitas, Jeff Reese, TJ Del Rocco, Alexis Esquijarosa, Jeff Hickman, Alan Coates, Tommy Redmond, Joe Mulligan, Chris Hixson, Jordan Fernie, Anthony Petty, Ron Cicerchia, Garrett Eldred, Slater Schoch, Aaron Anjilivelil and Rodney Baskerville. Remember, “teamwork makes the dream work.” Another special thanks goes to Woodstock Family Golf who graciously let us borrow its indoor putting area rug.
